Welcome to the blog! With your half speed you should have no problem qualifying for Boston once you start running decent mileage.

From Jon on Fri, May 01, 2009 at 13:01:51 from 138.64.2.76

Boy, you are dedicated- filling in your old posts. I commented on your last weeks entry, too.

I am not as fast as you guys but at least my times are getting a little faster. lol Ya that would be cool the team misfits blog. That girl from NY still has my shirt with her. She probably threw it away. It was my favorite shirt.

Jon,

Let me know what you think my next two weeks should be like for the marathon taper. Thanks Todd

From mattrow on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 14:53:18 from 71.195.202.89

On races you should log it as a race report. Nice race too be able to speed up the last mile is impressive.

From Jon on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 16:06:59 from 75.169.142.109

Todd

It depends a lot on how you are feeling. If you aren't fighting any injuries or long-term fatigue, I would recommend a 7-10 day taper. Mayby 8-10 miles easy next Saturday. Keep doing your 5-7 mile runs next week. The week of the marathon, maybe do something like 6-4-3-3-2? Or take Thursday off? Just remember to err on the side of being a bit too rested as opposed to over-trained.

And like Matt said, put a check in your entry for today that "This is a race report". Then you can fill in the race name, time, etc and it will put in with the race reports.

From Burt on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 19:58:17 from 98.167.151.26

Great job on the 3rd place finish. That's a fast time.

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 20:26:15 from 192.168.1.1

I think speed-wise you have enough to go for BQ, and your preparation justifies the risk. If you bomb, you bomb, nothing to lose. You'll still get a PR barring a major major disaster even if BQ pace happens to be more than you can handle.

Regarding taper, I would not drop below 5 miles a day until the last 2 days. At this point in your training if you go below that mileage for 3 days or more the loss of aerobic conditioning will probably outweigh the benefits of glycogen buildup and the nervous system freshening. The reasoning is that your nervous system does not need freshening, it is not the limit right now, it can be a bit stale with no effect on how well you run in the marathon. Extra glycogen could be of some use, but at the same time the aerobic loss would waste the extra resource beyond the benefit.

Also, if you tend to get worried or excited about the race as it approaches, it is better to just keeping jogging to calm yourself down. Too much adrenaline from week out to the half way mark of the marathon is not good.

Wow I am excited with my finish. I feel like I have done well even though I had 3:20 as my goal I was not far off. I did not cramp at all, but did feel a little tired on the hill. I need 3:15:59 to score Boston. My very first marathon in 2004 was a 4:32:16 in Salt lake my times have been getting faster each marathon I have done. The Boston time should not be to hard for me to reach. I am running St George and will train and do what ever it takes to qualify. Thanks so much to FastrunningBlog for all your support and help. I will take this finish since it is a PR for me by 8 minutes. Thanks again guys and good job to all that ran.

You would get a bigger return on your time for just building miles up to 60-70 mpw, then maybe add some speedwork if you can get above that.

Maybe do a few extra miles Mon and Tues, then a bit easier Wed and Thur. I never worried much about tapering for that race- not long enough, hard enough, or important enough to do a real taper.

From Mattrow on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 10:22:03 from 138.64.2.76

I agree with Jon I am not going to be doing much of a taper for the relay. Not important Jon don't you know Todd is the rabbit on the team. I need him to run really fast so I can take it easy.

I run in the heat, lunch time or after work. You have to acclimate to it. I always always bring a water bottle and some money, and a hat. If I have to detour by 7-11, so be it. Plan your route with a few water stops, public fountains, etc. I have a few routes that get afternoon shade. You'll get use to it. The heat will slow you down, no doubt about it, plan accordingly.

Hard to say, Todd. Really depends on what works well for you. I've found I race best if I try to get in a lot of miles Mon/Tues, do a medium day Wed, then do shorter days Thursday and Friday. I don't like to just take the day off, cause it leaves me feeling sluggish. But if it works for you, do it.

For me, if I were doing 60 miles in a week, I would do something like 12-10-8-5-5-20.

( nothing like a cold bath)  Ran around Bear Lake today around 8 am the weather today was a bit warmer and I enjoyed the scenery.  Just got home and unpacking.  Ran a slower pace with the wife who is running her first half marathon at the Top of Utah.

When you figure out how to finish up you training let me know. I have been pondering the same thing.

Hope to see at the Top of Utah half.

What is your plan for saturday. Last year I dropped my wife off at the start of the half. Note if you do that make sure you leave before the race starts. You could watch her as she come out of the canyon, turns onto hollow road then see her at the finishline.

Well got at least 7 miles done after a awesome job by my wife for her first half marathon today. She did great and good job to all you FRB members. I saw alot of you running strong today. I stayed a little busy at the finish doing CPR on a guy that went down. We had no pulse and he hit his head really bad on the ground. Went into cardiac arrest and I did not think he was going to make it and luckily we had alot of EMT's and nurses on scene that could help with CPR and I was told after they got him loaded up that they got a heart rate back. Good luck fellow who ever you are, he was so close to the finish, maybe 100 yards. I sure hope he makes it and you are in our thoughts today. Good Job guys and gals. I took some pics of Jon and Matt and will get you some pictures sent to you.

Ran 12 miles today it was a slower 12 miles, my legs feel like yours Matt. Maybe its because my milage has doubled since my last training for a marathon. Going to take a break day (have to work all night) than sleep and hit a long run early Sunday morning. 60 miles a week is hard I can not see how people run 80 plus. do you think a day before a long run its ok to take a break or jump right into a long run. I think the rest will help me out really.

woke up at 5 am and ran a long run today due to missing yesturday because of the family stuff, but I figured that the day before with a little rest would help.  Ran a huge loop around several cities and I feel like my endurance has gotten a lot better with adding more miles during the week.  I feel like I could have ran alot more and hope for a little faster speed though.  Maybe that is from my legs getting 50 miles in the week and have not done that much before in 5 days.   But my time was 2:30:06 ,so I think that with the down hill in St George I will be where I need to be and that is 3:15:59.  Hey Jon or Matt can you kinda point me in the direction of what I should do for the next 3 weeks like taper stuff.  Thanks guys for the input.  Todd

Its just sore and I can move it ok, but just want to make sure that i dont hurry out and cause more damage to it. should not cause problems this far into my training lets hope anyways. I have been thinking about what to suggest for a taper. The only thing I could think of suggesting is what I did for Ogden. Your milage is very simular to mine before I ran ogden, so here is a suggestion.

Taper that was planned

M T W Th F SA SU total

7 5 10 8 5 16 off 50

6 off 9 8 5 12 off 40

5 off 5 4 off 26.2 off 40

Actual

M T W Th F SA total

8.3 5.46 10.03 6.45 5.23 15.2 50

8 5 off 5 off 10.05 28.0

5 off 5 3.7 off marathon 40

I don't know if this is the best taper but it seemed to work ok. A week before the marathon my IT band was a little sore so I didn't run really hard and cut a few mile out the make sure everything was healthy for the marathon. Now I just got to figure out how I want to work my taper. I have a 10K saturday and my foot is sore so I need to make sure I am healthy. Then I will be hunting Sept 23 to Sept 26. Good luck with figuring out what you want to do.

Ok today I wanted to speed up and see where I could hold my pace at and still feel good.  In the last 4 years I have never broke 20:00 in a 5k and trust me I have tried many times.  Today I started and ran the first 1.5 miles up a steady climb and my average pace was a 6:20 I feel really good at this point and could not believe it when I looked at my watch at 3.10 miles I had broke the 20:00 minute mark.  My time was 19:14 holy cow I thought that was never going to happen.  So I finish at 5 miles and look at my watch it is 32:19.  That is fast for me and I feel great about the pace.  Average 6:20 and best pace was at 5:36.  Yahooo I like it.

Ok well still recovering after a marathon that I wanted to do better at.  It started out really well I was ahead of the 3:10 pace group for 13 miles. I started to feel really good at my 1:31 half time and from there I started to get a really hot spot on my inside foot.  Well the further I went the more I started to realize that I was getting a blister and it was going to be a big one.  I got to mile 20 and I looked at my right shoe and it was no longer White.  My shoe was Red and was caused from the blister breaking and I was bleeding pretty good.  Well I  started to think that I never get blisters on the inside of my foot and I could feel the pain like no other coming on on every little turn or movement of my foot. I then realized that I made a mistake and one that I know better.  I was given a free pair of socks from a friend at a running store and these socks were like wearing no socks really light and almost see through.  My foot was rubbing on the side of my shoe that caused this mess and I began to watch that 3:15 time I was shooting for slip away from me.  Now it was just get to the finish and I did just that and finished at 3:25:08.  I am happy with the time and it was not my day for sure but will learn from my mistake on changing socks.  Great job Matt and others that PR'd this should have been my race and I can not hang my head low because I am not a fast runner, but have knocked off 1 hour and 5 minutes off my very first marathon.

Sorry you had the sock/blister problems. Keep working and good things will follow.

1 hour and 5 minutes since the first marathon? WOW!

Take care of your bleeding foot. Dang feet, we need to figure out a way to make them bullet proof!

From Mattrow on Mon, Oct 05, 2009 at 09:05:19 from 138.64.2.76

Too bad about your foot. I wish I would of know that you were that close to me at the half. You will get your BQ at another race.

From todd kelly on Mon, Oct 05, 2009 at 16:56:54 from 70.192.118.2

thanks everyone I will keep trying and be positive about this. Its funny how we make simple adjustments and we know better then to do it. Trust me I will get through this and will be back at it to get that 3:15.

From Jon on Mon, Oct 05, 2009 at 17:17:00 from 138.64.2.76

Bummer about the blister, Todd. I looked up your time Sat and knew you wanted a bit better than this. But nice job toughing it out to a good finish even with the foot (darn new socks!).

Well I had a long three weeks off and was up in the mountains the entire time.  I must say the break was good after St George, but today started back at it.  I did not just do nothing that three weeks I hiked my butt off in the mountains every day.  Today I ran a 5 mile loop started slow and finished pretty strong.  Feel really good.

No my diet has not changed. It seems though that after St George I was just really drained.(mostly because I feel like I had failed my goal to qualify.) Yes I am still here I am just going to start adding the miles this winter. I love running on the trails on Antelope Island in the snow, so we will see how it goes. What you up to Jon?

From Jon on Wed, Dec 09, 2009 at 23:27:04 from 75.169.150.180

I only run outside a few times a week. Since I'm trying to do high mileage (80-100/week), I'm trying to do everything I can to make it easy on my body. Right now that means 2 times a day on the treadmill.

its a small indoor track they said 10 times around is a mile, it seems like it was pretty small I seem to run alot faster on the straight aways and not so fast on the corners. I had a clicker counter that counted the laps.
